Joey Pigza Loses Control is the much anticipated sequel to the super popular, award winning Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key!
Joey Pigza really wants to know his estranged dad and convinces his mom to let him spend some time with him over the summer. But Joey's dad is just as wired as Joey used to be (before his ADHD meds) and now his dad is pressuring him to stop the meds and try to control his ADHD himself, cold turkey, just like Joey's dad did when he beat alcoholism. Joey sees himself hurtling toward disaster.
Booklist called this book "a fine way to gain insight into the problems ADHD, 'hyper' children face."
Publisher's Weekly said "Like its predecessor, this high-voltage, honest novel mixes humor, pain,
fear and courage with deceptive ease. Struggling to please everyone
even as he sees himself hurtling toward disaster, Joey emerges as a
sympathetic hero, and his heart of gold never loses its shine."

Read-Aloud vs. Individual Reading:
For kids in fourth grade, this book will likely need to be a read-aloud rather than for individual reading, as children generally do not read on the reading level (difficulty level) of this book until the end of fourth grade. The majority of fifth graders and older should be able to read this book independently.
There are several different book covers available for this book. We admit be judge a book by its cover, and we truly love every one of them!
There are a number of lesson/activity packets available for Joey Pigza Loses Control on the popular teacher website teacherspayteachers.com. We haven't personally used them with our classes because we teach the younger grades, but they all seem to have a lot of positive reviews. (If you aren't familiar with this site, it's full of lesson plans, activities, learning games, and other curriculum materials made by teachers. We LOVE the site!!).
