What I Like About Me
by Allia Zobel-Nolan

The children in this book are all very different and they love it! Some have braces, others have curly hair or freckles, and many are from different ethnic backgrounds. The message? That differences are a cause for celebration! And the novelty items--
like flaps, curly hair, a mirror--add to the fun.

Interest Level: PreS-Gr. 2         Difficulty Level: age 4-8

As you can see, the two dominant themes of self-esteem and valuing diversity are woven throughout the text and the illustrations. In the first spread below, that mirror she is holding up actually has a mylar sheet inside that enables children to see themselves and answer the question posed in the text: "What is it you like best about YOU?"
The spread shows happy children of different enthnicities eating foods from their respective cultures. The text reads "Our different lunches hit the spot--a burrito, sushi, or curry that's hot."
