The Colors of Us
by Karen Katz

Lena and her mother take a walk and observe the many different shades of brown they see in friends and neighbors. Lena's mother teaches Lena how to make certain shades of brown, using colors of foods to describe them (cinnamon, creamy peanut butter, chocolate brown cupcakes...).  It's a cute, kid-friendly premise and School Library Journal promises the "pictures joyously convey the range of human pigmentation...positive and useful."
