by Walter Dean Myers and Christopher Myers

What it's about
This picture book for older children is a celebration of the city of Harlem. Rhythmic, jazzy text conveys the city's history--full of determination and pride but also racism and hurt. Vibrant collage and gouache illustrations accompany the text.

Why we like it
Great for teaching tolerance/non-discrimination or African American cultural identity. If you are going on a trip to NYC, this is a great pre-visit read! However, this book is heavy on imagery and subtle cultural references, so it definitely best for older children.
