Willa Jo's family is falling apart. Her baby sister died and her mother has sunk into a deep depression. Unable to care for her daughters, their mother sends Willa Jo and Little Sister to live with their Aunt Patty, who tries to care for the girls but can't quite understand what they are going through. Each, in her own way, is trying to deal with the grief and 'get near to baby'.
