Cute Picture Books for Kids Our Favorite CUTE, CHARMING, and
SWEET Books
We
are often asked to create a 'favorites' list, but have hesitated
because we really do like all of the books that we feature on this
site. (Remember, if we don't like a book, we don't include it at all!
That's why there are no negative reviews on this site.)
However,
we do have some personal favorites---books that we love reading aloud
and our kids ask for over and over again.
We are just getting started on this list of our favorite cute,
adorable, sweet, and charming books. We plan to add many more in the
coming weeks. Here's what we have so far:
How to
Heal a Broken Wing by
Bob Graham
Summary:
This is arguably our favorite children's book ever! It is so sweet and
packs an powerful message as well. In the story, a
little boy walking along a busy street notices an injured
bird.
His mother lets him bring it home, where they bandage it. With the
attention of the whole family, it heals and finally
it's set free to fly away. "Poignantly told and visually rich."(SLJ starred review)
Summary:
If you want a darling (true!) story with a happy ending, this is a
great choice. In the book, a family on a picnic at the park encounters
a stray dog that captures
their hearts. Feeling he must belong to someone, they leave him behind,
then think about the little pup all week long. On another
picnic the next week, they see him again and decide to
adopt him, but first they must
convince the dog catcher not to take him away.
A Couple
of Boys Have the Best Week Ever by
Marla Frazee
Summary: Best
friends Eamon and James have a blast while staying at Eamon's
grandparents, although it's not because of the Nature Camp they
are attending or all the activities that Eamon's
grandpa has come up with. It's their sheer joy of
being together! This
is an adorable and fun book any time of the year, but it'd be
especially fitting at
the start of summer. Frazee has captured the sweet joy of friendship!
Summary:
Amos, an elderly zookeeper, spends time every day visiting
with each of his animal friends.
One day, when he is sick at home, his animal friends decide to
return his kindness by visiting him at home to cheer him up. SLJ summed this
sweet title up as "a quiet
tale of good deeds rewarded."
Summary:
Olivia is an intense,
energetic pig who wears herself and others out with her
over-the-top
activities. She's always on the move, going from one big project to the
next, even at bedtime. Children can't help but see themselves in this
energetic little darling. Falconer's simple line drawings and
spot
red ensure that
Olivia's larger than life personality takes center stage.
Summary:
Chrysanthemum likes her name, until she goes to kindergarten and the
children make fun of it. But when their popular music teacher announces
that she is going to name her baby the prettiest name she's
ever
heard Chrysanthemum!--the cute little mouse learns to treasure her
unique name.
Summary:
In a first person
narrative that perfectly captures a child's emotions and perceptions,
readers accompany a girl on a visit to Nanna and Poppy's house
for bike riding, garden exploring, harmonica playing, and
finally
a nap. Raschka's artwork exudes a childlike quality with
squiggly lines and bursts of color. Together, the text and
illustrations capture the
exuberance of time with grandparents and the lively world of
a child's imagination.
Summary:
Lucy is the best artist in the class and all of the children agree. So
why is Tommy bullying her? When the teacher talks to Tommy, Lucy
sees that Tommy was actually feeling jealous. "There are lots of books
about bullies, but this one is especially thoughtful." (Booklist)
Summary: An adorable story about
pre-verbal little girl who accompanies her dad
to the Laundromat,
then leaves her treasured stuffed
bunny behind. Her struggle to communicate is adorable, and
she's so full of personality that readers will find root for a happy
ending.
Summary:
Written in an authentic, childlike voice, this story's primary focus is
the building and landscaping of the dePaola family's house in 1938, and
all of the many problems that occur, including a hurricane. It is
filled with subtle humor, and the charming illustrations
bring it all to life. This kid-friendly autobiographical book by
dePaola is sure to please. This title is the first in a series of eight
books about the author's youth.
