Books set on the World War II Homefront
Children's Books for K-Gr. 2
(For older children, see red text just below)

Guess what...There aren't many books set on the World War II homefront or battlefield that are written for young children in Kindergarten through Grade 2. Gasp! :)  What, you're not shocked? Yep, neither were we. Actually, we were surprised to find the four that we did!

While most Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade teachers will, of course, not be looking to build 'World War II lesson plans', the following books use the World War II home- front or heroic tales from World War II as a backdrop for stories about generosity, hard work, and family pride. And so while war stories may not resonate with this age group :), these larger themes and lessons certainly will.

Crow Call by Lois Lowry
Crow Call
by Lois Lowry

Summary:
When Liz's father came back from WWII, it took some time for the two to reconnect and get to know each other again. Liz was quite shy around her father until a day out hunting crows helped them to bond. (Only marginally about WWII, but appropriate for this category because the absence of parents is often the most significant impact of war on a child.)
