Rapunzel
by Paul Zelinsky & the Brothers Grimm

Rapunzel by Paul Zelinsky is a stunning retelling that keeps true to the original timeless story of the young girl who was taken from her parents shortly after birth (because they stole her rapunzel plants) and raised alone in a tall tower, with her only visitor a handsome prince who scaled the tower with the help of her long locks.

"This is a gorgeous book" (Horn Book) that reinforces the notion that children will indeed respond to fine art, given the right context. What makes it a stand-out from other retellings are the stunning, sophisticated illustrations--done in late Italian Renaissance style-- which take center stage compared to the spare text.

This book was a Caldecott Honor Recipient for 1998!

Below are sample pages from inside this book. The art is quite elegant and sophisticated for a children's book, but your students/child will respond to it!
